ACOOP Volunteer and NHS Devon Staff Training Day – HMP Channings Wood
A staff training day was held at HMP Channings Wood attended by 5 ACOOP volunteers and 4 NHS staff from Devon.
The day started with a SO delivering counter conditioning training and a talk on personal safety followed later on in the day by a talk about the VPU prisoners. After a tour of the VPU area a talk was given about the sex treatment programme in Channings Wood.
The day concluded with a tour of the Therapeutic Community and talk from PO and 2 prisoners about the changing behaviour treatment programme.
The event was organised with the help of the Social Inclusion Officer and fully endorsed by the Governor.
Participants were asked for their opinions at the end of the day:
· ‘Very useful and a real insight into prison life. Interesting to see the different approaches from prison staff. Very powerful and thought provoking.’
· ‘A valuable training day that gave a balanced view of the prison and will better equip us for working as a volunteer.’
· ‘A very informative day, we gained a range of views, opinions and experiences of prison life from officers and inmates.’
· ‘A very rewarding day. We need to do more work here!! We can see how the prisoners and staff would benefit.’
· ‘Very informative and useful information.’
· ‘An eye opener and so good to see that help is being given for behaviour change to take place.’
· ‘A valuable training.’
· ‘Very informative and thought provoking. Even where a repetition of what we have been told/done before, an update and reminder is always useful. An annual event would be good.’
· ‘Very powerful and useful re safety in prison and the work and behaviour change. Maybe repeat if the need arises.’
